The Process

old-camera.jpg

As a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), I adhere to the highest standards of professionalism and ethics. I follow both the APG Code of Ethics and the Board for Certification of Genealogists' Code of Ethics and Conduct. All information concerning living individuals and any material not part of the public record is handled with care and discretion.

Getting Started

Once you contact me to retain services, we'll discuss your goals—by phone, video chat, or in person—and define the scope of the project. We'll review the information you already have and agree on the number of hours to authorize. Sharing what you know helps avoid duplication and ensures a focused, efficient process.

Rates vary based on scope and typically include travel within a 50-mile radius. Out-of-pocket expenses (e.g., repository fees, parking, copies, postage) are billed separately. A retainer may be required depending on the scope and complexity of the work. It will be applied to the total cost of the project, and any unused portion will be refunded. Research begins upon receipt of your signed agreement and retainer.

During the Research

While I make every effort to meet your goals, some records may be missing, inaccessible, or inconclusive. Additional time may be needed to verify facts or relationships. Research fees apply even when results are limited or inconclusive. If challenges arise, I'll pause work and contact you before proceeding.

Deliverables

At the conclusion of the project, you'll receive a detailed research report with recommendations for any further research, a research log, key documents, and a final invoice with itemized expenses.

Every project begins with a conversation.
I look forward to learning more about your goals and how I can help.
